Phone call instructions + my week!
Dear Family and Friends!
Where does time go!? It is crazy thinking that it is Christmas Time
already and that the year is almost over! I am so excited for this new
experience of Christmas on my own where I can focus on the true
meaning, but I am also very excited to call home and see how my family
and bare testimony to them! This week I am sending a little letter
from our president that shows how the calls will work out and I am so
excited!!
Dear Elders and Sisters,
Each year there are questions about how to call home for Christmas.
Here are some instructions to help your call home be successful.
Please share this information with your family so they will be
prepared you will both be on the same page.
1. Please DO call your family on Christmas day. Per the Missionary
Handbook, please be careful that this call does not pull your thoughts
away from your service or create a financial burden.
2. The call shall last no more than 60 minutes. If your parents live
in two different households, you may divide this time between them as
you see fit. The call should be made from your mission phone UNLESS
your parents live outside the Continental United States.
3. For those of you whose parents live outside the Continental United
States, you must NOT use your mission phone to make this call. You are
authorized to either receive a call from them at a member's home or
contact them via Skype or Facetime using your iPad.
4. For all missionaries, if you would like, you may use your iPad to
Skype or Facetime your family. Please consider this option carefully
in that not everyone likes to Skype or Facetime and at times, that
connection can be poor. Please write your parents today to learn their
preference regarding a Skype or Facetime call or a phone call.
If you have any questions about this letter, please feel free to call
me directly.
Sister Ames and I pray that your experience with contacting your
family will be beautiful and meaningful. Please consider taking a
moment to bear your testimony to them at some time during this call.
It will help you keep your eye single to the Glory of God and at the
same time bless their life - perhaps in ways that will surprise you.
Thank you in advance for your faithfulness and obedience. As we strive
to be consecrated and obey with exactness, we will be able to ask God
with confidence for the miracles we seek.
Merry Christmas.
Love,
President Ames
If you have any questions mom or dad or fam let me know through email
and I will help you to understand what it is saying!
So on to my week! This week was so speedy fast and I had so many
amazing experiences and stories that I feel help me to grow a love not
only of the members but of my father in heaven! Here is my week in a
giant nutshell!
Week December 7-13 2015
Monday:
Wow it is still so crazy to me how fast Pdays go and how much you can
get done if you are really focused!! So my goal every pday is to email
back everyone who took time to email me through the week, and let me
tell you it is not easy. It is time consuming, but so worth every
second, because I love them all! So today we emailed in the morning
and Elder 'Otuafi was in deep emails when a dark completed man walked
up to him in a fem voice and asked his his name and if he could ask
him a few questions. So he said sure and the guys asked him all of the
gay questions and our views as a church. Elder handled it well and the
guy said thank you and walked off, but throughout the next hour he
kept coming back and telling him how handsome he was and asking about
his girlfriend. For me it was funny to see how nervous he was with
this guy that would not leave him alone and was being creepy, but it
was an experience I always can get him with! So today I went and got
another haircut, which feels like weekly, but it was so nice and I
love my hair! After the hair cut we went to the church with all the
zone and we actually played futsal and it was so much fun!! It is the
first time I have touched a soccer ball in 5 months and man I felt
like I touched it yesterday!! As we finished up pday we had the elders
drive us to the hospital to teach Jesus Vera and as we were driving we
realized that the car was on empty and that there was still about 4
miles to the next gas station, and man I can say that car was going by
faith and faith alone. It was an amazing time being able to pray for
us to make it and have it work! As we got to the hospital we found
Jesus looking so much better and not shaking as bad. He had all his
scans today and should have results by tomorrow. We taught him the
restoration in the point of view of Joseph Smith and he at the end
told us, "Elders, brothers, I know Joseph Smith is real, because just
like Jesus set it up for the old people Joseph set it up again for us
newer people!"
That there made me smile and we also downloaded the gospel library app
on his phone and he told us he would not be sleeping tonight! He
wanted to learn as much as he can while he is cooped up. I love that
man! So on our way home we took the bus and as we got off the bus
elder 'Otuafi looked at me and said with wide eyes, "where is my
iPad?" Come to find out he left it on the bus stop bench and we got a
ride by the zone leaders to go get it!! Pine was very lucky it wasn't
stolen! It was an amazing day to talk with my family by email and I
love them all so much and miss them a lot this Christmas Season, but
know that as I go through this season relying on my Heavenly Father
and Jesus Christ, my testimony and relationship will grow in them!!
Tuesday:
Today I was afraid was going to be a really long day, because we had
over 4 hours before dinner and 3 hours after. However, to start off
the day we had the Bond's over to inspect our house and I swear that
he is one day going to be a mission president! He is so solid in the
gospel! So after they showed us some cool scriptures and stuff they
headed out and I found 2 packages with my name on them!! We opened
them and found awesome stuff inside!! My parents and family are the
best and really know how to make me and my companion feel at home! So
after we opened the packages we went out to work. We worked so hard
that we were able to have 2 other lessons, both with contacts, and the
amazing thing was is that I lead out the day and lead the lessons! I
can practically understand everything that is being said and I really
love it! I never thought Spanish would be so enjoyable! I would say
the first 6 months of learning it were very hard. All I can say is
that it was almost a stress put on my shoulders to try and speak it
all the time, but know it is like a switch. It goes on and off
amazingly and the weirdest thing is that I can not say fast sentences
to my companion Without stuttering, but when I talk to investigators I
can say things perfectly! I know that it is because of the power of
God and I love it so much!! So we had a brilliant idea to go to a
Mexican super market to find people and we asked the main manager if
we could talk to the costumes if we don't disturb them and they gave
us permission. So we talked to a few and gave some cards out, but as
we were leaving the lady we talked to stopped us and asked win really
humble voice, "can I have one of those cards of Jesus and is there a
day I can learn more!?" So we, excited and happy said, "yes here the
card is and when would you like us to talk to you?" So we talked for a
bit and then left so she could get back to work and it was so great!
The work is really changing in this area!! To end, we received the
best news from an investigator! Jesus called us crying and said that
he got news that he will be having full coverage insurance for the
rest of his life to cover what the hospital calls a disease, because
his injuries will be there more or less for life. He was so happy and
it is a blessing for him to have that help and he now feels that God
truly is watching over him!! Really today we walked so much and talked
so much that I just want to drop!

Wednesday:
Today for me was a little bit slower day that seemed to drag on for
along time, but the more I think about it I know that it was slow for
a reason. I believe the lord wanted me to learn something and I am
glad that the day went the way it did! So today we went to the church
to practice a Christmas Program that a member from our ward is helping
us to put on. We have a Christmas party this Friday and we are putting
on an act of the Saviors life. So we practiced for a good 2 hours and
then Hno. Torres gave his testimony thanking us for what we do. It was
very nice and I truly love him.
So after our practice, Hno. Torres took us home and we had the
opportunity to study the for 3 hours! As we got going for the day we
walked about 30 minutes to a Mexican supermarket to find out that we
hit perfect dead hour where all the people are picking up their kids
or working. There was no one in the store, so we contacted around for
a bit realizing that only English speakers lived in the area! As we
realized that we decided to go across town and contact some people
nearby the TWU campus and as we passed the house of our investigator
Jesus' house we got a text saying he was home and right as we walked
up we saw his medical supply truck come where they were delivering his
new bed and everything! It was a perfect opportunity to serve him! As
we were in there he signed a no resuscitate order and ask that we
signed it as witnesses. It was a little hard for me to do as I thought
about it, because I don't ever want to loose him, but I did it,
because he wanted me to! After a little while of people coming in and
out of his small room we decided we were just in the way, So we headed
back for dinner eating at the Texas Women's University Chick Fillet.
We caught a bus nearby to go to the church where we had an amazing
lesson with and investigator, Angela. She keeps telling us she wants
to be baptized, but just not yet. She has investigated the church for
over 2 years now and we are ready for her to make her decision. So we
planted our flag, or goal for her and she has a really good plan to
help herself to find the answers she needs. We are excited for her and
know she will receive her answers! So we had a little spare time so we
planned at the church while YM AND YW was going on. As we were
planning we were attacked by two little kids who we took some pictures
with after that tackled us to the ground! After a little planning and
being tackled we got an amazing brother in our ward to take us home!
It was a great day!
Thursday: HAPPY 6 MONTH MARK!!
Wow today was such a good day!! We started off the day busing over to
the church and having a Zone Council where we set our goals for the up
coming months and learned what we can do to become the best
missionaries possible! I believe I learned a life principle that I
want to share and have you all try. Every week take time and
prayerfully ask yourself what 2 things you can do to improve your
spiritual body, and then after you ask yourself that, ask yourself if
there is anything else you can do, and if there is fix your 2 points
to put in perspective what you can do! I also learned the importance
of following up with the members and investigators. It caught my
attention that we have been taught thousands of times the Importance
of the iPads and phones to communicate with everyone, and I believe
the main reason is to follow up in every aspect we possibly can. As I
was sitting there getting to know my new zone a sister asked my if I
knew an Elder Booher who served in Hurricane, and I said, "um of
course I do!" Come to find out it was her brother who was Elder
Booher!! So know after knowing him I have the opportunity to serve
with his sister!! It was cool!
So this evening we had a special privilege to go on an exchange with
Hno. Pumphrey who is a white man in our ward and come to find out he
comes to our ward, because his wife wants to learn Spanish because he
knows it from his mission in California and loves the Spanish wards!
So we went and visited another white member in our ward who recently
got baptized and his wife left him and their little baby boy. We
focused on the story of Job and how he stayed faithful and it was an
amazing lesson! Awesome thing about that lesson is that I can say I
taught a lesson in the Dallas Mission boundaries, because we were
outside of our mission. It was a weird thought thinking that we were
out of our mission, but that it only took us 5 minutes to drive to
Denton again. Then we went and visited with Crystal, a recent convert
that Elder Lickiss, my last companion baptized. She was really solid
and was so sweet! The reason we went was to invite her to come back to
church every Sunday and it was well worth our time!! All in all I
learned a lot from Hno. Pumphrey and learned that missions are meant
to be enjoyed, not endured!
(6.)(7.)
Friday:
Wow today the last few day and the next 2 day to co,e are just really
hectic and party days for us as missionaries! Yesterday was my 6 month
mark, today was our Christmas party, tomorrow we have our coordination
meeting and a dinner with converts and then Sunday we have an amazing
musical at the church in the evening!
So today we had the opportunity to give service all morning by helping
set up chairs and tables and even decorate till the mid afternoon.
Then as we got home we had enough time to call about 30 different
random contacts on our cell phone and invite them to the activity we
had. It was really fun and then we headed to the activity. As we
walked in I saw a cello on the far side of the gym, and of course I
went and played it! I wish I would have gotten a picture, I will get
another chance and will take on then! However, us as missionaries took
part in the program and acted out parts of the savior life and it was
really an amazing experience! Elder Otuafi and I also had the
opportunity to be part of the nativity and had such a great time. I
feel as a missionary that I am really able to focus more on the
spiritual side of Christmas rather than wrap myself in all the
Christmas bows and paper. My challenge for all of you is to truly find
the meaning of CHRISTmas this holiday season and to watch the birth of
our savior. As you do I promise you will find or think of something
you can do to change someone's life this holiday season. CHRIST is the
gift and always will be the best gift I will ever receive in all of my
life.
(8.)(9.)(10.)
Saturday:
Wow today was such a great day! We started off the morning with a
great missionary coordination meeting where I was able to really
understand my role as a missionary and I hope I have the chance to go
into the meeting in the morning with the ward council to get more
involved! So after our meeting we went to the library and had a great
weekly planning. We did it in perfect time and were able to really
have a good companionship inventory. I am definitely not ready for
marriage, but I can say that I am excited to have a comp inventory
with my wife and not a missionary!;) So for my 6 month mark we went
and ate on top of a restaurant calls LSA Burgers. It was very pretty
and we found a funny picture of Jesus and how the world twists views
to make everything seem okay to do. And as we returned home I found my
Package of my Christmas starter package!! I got all my Christmas trees
and lots of decorations!! I have the greatest family in all the world!
We had a great opportunity to contact more people today in an
apartment complex close to our church, and we really number wise
didn't have a lot of success, however, we found a family that let us
in and even let us stay and teach them a little more than we had
planned. They just arrived from Honduras 3 months ago and don't know a
lot of English and so we told them we would come and teach them. They
excepted and they said they will be to the Christmas concert tomorrow
night at the church. They seemed very interested and we are hoping and
praying that they are interested. They were golden and love the
savior! So this evening we had the opportunity to go on an exchange
with Hno. Islas to teach and active family about the plan of salvation
and how the temple applies into that. They haven't been to the temple
to be sealed yet, but we taught them a great lesson and it was so
spiritual. I am so grateful members who have more experience than us
who can truly bare strong testimony that the church has changed their
whole life. It was a great day and I only expect them to stay the same
or be better!
(11.)
Sunday:
"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."
This is a quote I have just really come to love, and every time I read
it I find a new way to look at it. So today I had the opportunity to
practice in the ward choir that is really small and not amazingly well
like the one back home, but man did it bring back really good
memories! We practiced 2 songs and man did I want to conduct for the
older man that was up there struggling. However, we develop our
talents by doing. So today at church we had some great talks on the
Christmas season and also had a talk of a departing missionary to
California this Wednesday named Sam Stasser. It was a great sacrament
meeting and we even got a less active back to church!! During our
lessons I learned a lot of things, and the one that sticks with me the
most is how when Jesus our Savior comes again he will come not as a
baby where only few new he was born, but in all his glory and Angels
about him to proclaim that he is the savior of the world! I look
forward to that day where I can be with my savior, but man do I still
have a lot of things to fix to make sure I am truly ready for his
coming! So after church we went to dinner at a recent converts house
named Moises. His mom made us his home made Venison soup with rice,
tortillas and even a bean that was more mashed like a potato. Is was
so good and I learned a lot of cool things about of course the Texas
Hunting season and how it works! Funny story about that meal! As I was
eating I began sweating so bad and they were all asking me if the food
was to spicy or if I needed a tortilla to cool me down, but the weird
thing was is I didn't feel it was hot, I was just sweating so they
made fun of me saying I am still to gringo, but one day I would be a
Hispanic! So this evening we had the privilege to go to the concert
called "an evening of Christmas Joys." It was so pretty and I was very
impressed with the organist and beautiful horns and trumpets! I
received the best compliment by a Hispanic that onLy speaks Spanish.
She said, "wow you are amazing at your Spanish for only having 6
months learning it." I felt in heaven and I was finally filled with
that missing Christmas spirit that my family helps me get. But now I
am excited for Christmas, but at the same time realize it will be so
different. I would say more centered on Christ, the true meaning!
It was such a beautiful day full of Christmas Cheer!!
Can you imagine if every day was Christmas, but focused on the true meaning!?
6 month mark!
Dear Family and Friends,
What an amazing week I have had, and it is so weird to think that this
Thursday I complete 6 months in the wonderful service of the Lord! All
I know is that the time goes much faster than I was expecting it too!
I have learned some amazing things about myself and about my purpose
this week! I hope that the thing I share will uplift you this week and
help you see the love I have for my mission! I wouldn't be anywhere
else!
Week November 30-6 December 2015
Monday:
Wow today was a really different pday for me!!! So we walked to the
library early, because we don't have wifi at our house, and as I was
getting ready to email we got a call from a new investigator telling
us he is just having a hard time and feels he can be open to us and
just needed some scriptures to help him through his hard times. It was
a really cool experience and then as we were sitting there getting
ready to go back in the library another guy asked us some questions
and we taught him a 10 minute lesson and had such an amazing time
doing it too! So after that I had the chance to email for a little bit
and head shopping!! We shopped and then headed to the church to be
with all the missionaries of our Zone. We had an ultimate frisbee game
and had such a fun time!! I hope that we can play it again! And after
that we got going again and had such an amazing night eating with a
member and his kids and also searching for the other Elders phone! It
was a great day and had such a fun time!! I also just learned how to
say I love you in Tongan!!! Ofaatu: I love you.
Tuesday:
Wow today was a day full of ups and downs! So today we had the
opportunity to go and give service at a special needs school with
people who are older and it was so much fun!! They have such amazing
spirits about them and always see the good instead of the bad!! There
were two people there that I talked to that changed my outlook in my
mission and life!! Ones name was Richard. He was crying when I walked
up to him and he didn't want to talk to me. As I got to know him more
he told me that his dad just passed away and he was having a hard
time, and right them I wanted to teach him everything I had to offer,
but I knew he wouldn't understand it all, so he taught me how to teach
simple and to love!! His appearance changed in the simple words that I
said to him. "Your dad is so happy and is just watching over you now!"
He seemed much happier with that! Also I had the chance to play uno
with a lady who was in a wheelchair and had struggles speaking without
cut sentences. At least that is how I saw her from the outside. As I
got to know her she was able to tell me her story. She used to
volunteer at this school/home for the special needs, and then she
found out that she had serval palsy and it worsened fast. She told me
she was 54 and that her dream was just for people to treat her like a
human. The thing that stuck out to me that she said was, "people would
never guess, but even though we have problems, we understand more that
they think. We know what truly is going on in this world." These
angels are so close to God and they truly know this world they just
can not tell us!
So we had the awesome opportunity to also go out and contact people
most the afternoon. As we got going we pasted by the college institute
building and said hi to the senior couple Elder and sister Bond! He
spoke some Portuguese to us and we had an amazing talk with them and
then we got going to the true work of missionaries!! This is where the
downs of a mission come in for me. I love testifying and talking to
people, but them rejecting what we say or not having the same beliefs
is really hard for me. As I look back I definitely learned a lot and I
have a funny comic quotes that I laugh at now to keep my spirits up!!
We also had the great opportunity to go with Hno. Gonzalez and teach
Jesus Ibarra tonight in the church and what a powerful lesson it was!
I learned so much about following Jesus Christ because it is the right
thing to do, not because you want others to see you doing it. One
quote that stuck out to me from Hno. Gonzalez was the saying, "anyone
can have the priesthood in their lives and be lost, but those who have
the priesthood and a relationship with God are truly found."
Translation from Spanish makes it sound funny but it struck me that
anyone can truly have a communication with God. As I think about it
Joseph Smith was 14 and he saw God and Jesus Christ. I know you can
also see them with your spiritual eyes! I loved today so much! Also
what you do now determines your future, so Choose The Right!
Wednesday:
Wow today was such a spiritual day for my being uplifted at this
amazing zone conference by President Ames, but really the Spirit of
the Lord! So as we started our conference this morning President Ames
said, "I did not come here to sit in front of you and just talk, I
came here to learn with you, so what can we do to learn together!?"
The response was by have a Zone Conference Counsel where he starts and
leads a topic/point and we express our feelings on the point. It was
so amazing and I received real answers to so many questions! It went
so well that without realizing it we went over time a whole hour!! I
put my thoughts down below and I did them more based on things that
really came to my head as reading the given scriptures and discussing
together as a zone.
December 2nd 2015 Zone Conference
Denton, Tx
President Ames:
- A Victory in this mission is a Baptism, returning inactive, and
families going to the temple.
D&C 88:122
D&C 100:5
Open your mouths, you have been called of God. Your future children
are praying for you. Trust the thoughts that come to your heart and
resonate to your mind.
My Repentance List is an amazing way to change my life!
Life changing scripture:
D&C 88:123
Teaching by the Spirit:
How do you teach correct principles to have people govern yourself?
D&C 15-16
Why are they so similar!?
It is a gospel principle! It is for anyone who accepts the gospel!
I learned in the verse 6 that the most important thing is to preach the Gospel!
My mission call is my own section 15.
- Section 14 states it is because of our personal duty that we put in
our papers!
Our mission calls:
The blessings of the mission do not end when you leave as long as you
are living righteously.
- Trust the Lord that he will help you. (But he can't help you until you act)
D&C 50:13-14
Preach the Gospel by the Spirit.
It is not about the testimony of a Missionary, but the testimony of
the Investigator.
Build their testimonies.
Where did Alma receive the authority to Baptize. D&C 121:37
- He was ordained when he was wicked, but he was still ordained.
If the Apostles were to have stayed awake for that one hour, what
would they seen with Jesus!?
Alma 18
Why do we ask and teach what we do!? Really we do it so that they are
thinking and have the chance to feel the spirit!
- I want to be the kind of missionary that walks down the hallway and
people feel something different.
- We can be disciples of Christ! What is a true disciple!?
I have always thought, how can I be a true disciple of the Lord like
my great example Jody Rich? There is a scripture in 3 Nephi 11:15 that
really came to mind!
President Ames was told by Elder Falabella, your mission is so
amazing, but it is not because of you! It is because of your
missionaries. What does that help me to understand!?
How can you feel the Spirit!?
1. Prayer
2. Scripture
3. Testify
4. Music
5. Express Love for God and Man
6. Share Spiritual Experiences
7. Use the Priesthood Ordinances
Working with Members:
Ward Council Objectives
- Clear Objective (Assignments)
- Counseling about People!
- Following up With Assignments
- Edifying=Receive Revelation
Things we can do in there to influence:
- Be Positive (Never Gossip)
- Specific Needs (Communicate with WML
- Prime the Pump
- Make a list
Heavenly Father does not want the numbers of baptisms go down. There
is no way that is his plan, so what can we truly do to fix it!? D&C
123:17
- Satan knows the Doctrine too! The difference between him and us is
we go and do.
- Don't sit and stew go and do!
Work with the Members in their Homes-
Invite the members ahead of time to share an experience! Even talk to
the active members!
-Spend as much time in an active members home as you do an Investigator.
Write commitments and stick them to someone's fridge to remind them,
and follow up.
- When the faith of our leaders or members increases to match the
vision of our prophet we will see miracles.
Teaching the Gospel with Conviction-
*PCD
Purpose Driven Teaching:
1. "What does God want you to do?" (Planting the Flag) That is their Quest!
2. Ask Inspired Questions- Listening -What is the definition of
Inspired Questions.
3. Purpose Commitment Doctrine
We should always ask ourselves, "what do brother and sister brown need
to understand for them to accept and fulfill the commitment we will
invite them to make? What do we teach it to soften their hearts?"
We should teach the members or investigators simple truths, but have a
huge understanding or it!
You know more about the gospel than any investigator, because you
graduated from Primary.
- To understands a mans mind you have to listen to his words!
Alma 1:26
If we don't keep reading the Book of Mormon the feelings fade.
Evening Discussion:
The bishop holds the keys and he has the true knowledge of the facts.
But he and the ward council can not receive ways to help if they don't
truly ask.
It was truly an inspired time where I also learned that revelation is
a true opportunity for every individual to come to know God
personally.
So I was also able to meet with the bishop in Denton 6 ward and I and
my companion asked him for a blessing of guidance and council and he
accepted with joy!! So as he gave me this blessing I can remember some
basic things that he said to me and they were very personal and really
brushed on things I had questions about recently. He blessed me that I
would have the confidence to speak to those around me about the things
I have been learning, because the Spirit will testify to them. Also he
said as I walk around this area people will see me as something more
than normal person. I was blessed that the as I pass houses the spirit
will tell what doors to knock and which ones not too. He also touched
a point that we as a companionship were struggling with and he said,
as you work your hardest, pray together, counsel together, and work
together you will have success in this area and bring many souls unto
Christ.
For me the blessing was extremely useful and I am now very willing to
do that with every bishop I ever have!! As I got it tonight however,
it made me miss the blessings I received from my father for guidance
and counsel.
It truly was an amazing day of learning and uplifting!!
Thursday:
So today for me I think I really began to understand the word Success.
For me I kept thinking, "we have only taught one person today, how
have we had success?" I couldn't get it out of my head. All I was
thinking about was the number and how that one person was effected.
However as we got to an English ladies house that we had contacted
before and were just checking up on I feel I began to understand what
true success in a missionary life is. She told us how thankful she was
for us taking the time our of our lives to talk to her about God.
Right now she doesn't want to change, but she was willing to listen
because she loved our happiness and willingness to help everyone. For
me right there, that is when I understood what success should be. Yes
baptisms and the temple are important, but just like plants can't
produce vegetables until they are planted and nourished, these people
can't change without first having the seed planted! It was an amazing
opportunity, and for me now I just have to accept that every area has
its differences. Some are hard, some are easy, and some vary widely on
the members and missionaries. I believe all depend on the work of the
ward and missionaries, but still can have their issues. So today I had
the opportunity to get to know and investigator that we have had for
over 2 years, named Angela. She was very sweet, about 27 and had 2
kids. She has had a life of partying and isn't ready to change even
though she knows it is right. It is really hard to she her knowingness
that she needs to change, but her desire to change opposite. We
testified on how baptism is the first and greatest step and blessing
in the gospel and how as she does this she can and will have help
through all of her trials!! She took it well, but wasn't sure still.
It really was a good lesson and we did have success, because we talked
to other people and also had the chance to make others happier even by
that simple wave smile and hello!! What I learned from today was that
success should be measured by the change of ones soul, not by the
number of things done!
Friday:
Today was an amazing and warm day for us!! So today we started our day
by giving service at the Special Needs home and it was so much fun!!
My friends that I have made are their for life now and they are always
so welcoming too me! That is what I love about the special needs
people is that they are always so open and welcoming to everyone! So
we had a fun time playing games with them and watching a Christmas
Movie for about 2 hours and then we headed to the other Elders house
to get picked up by a member named Hno. Saldaña to got to his house
and give him some service!! As we arrived I felt right at home! He
lives out in the middle of nowhere and was fixing up his house and
putting in Sheet rock! Luckily I had the practice from Skylers house
and was ready to get to work!! We had a blast building part of the
house for about 3 hours before we had to get home for some contacting
and finding!! So as we got home and began walking to find we walked
through the city square to find out that there was a huge Christmas
Festival going on with who knows how many people!! There was by far
more that one thousand people there! The streets lawns and shops were
packed and we decided to call the other missionaries and to do
contacting in the area!!! As we were contacting we had so much success
with the Hispanics, and actually found a lot of members of the
church!! One contact that I did with some younger girls I noticed a
girl that was wearing her young women medallion and was very happy to
see missionaries out doing the work! It really was a fun way of
contacting and in all I think we gave out 8 or so Books of Mormon with
pockets full of cards and pamphlets!! I would love contacting like
this everyday and I hope we find more events like that!! The things I
learned tonight is to have more confidence and to trust that the lord
will help you as you make the first steps into a contact. The other
thing I learned was that God does put people in your path and want you
to talk to them, so don't ignore them!
Saturday:
So for awhile I have felt like a true missionary, but man today I
really felt it hit!! So today we had the opportunity to have our
missionary coordination meeting and I learned so much about the things
I can do or begin to do to have more success! It was a great time to
not only learn but increase my relationship with my district! So we
received a call today that our bus passes came in and so we walked to
the institute building and picked them up from our zone leaders! As we
were leaving we saw the couple missionaries Elder and Sister Bond, who
I love so dearly! I always have great conversations with them and
today as I was walking away Elder Bond looked at me after giving me a
hug and he said, "Elder, ever since you arrived, me and my wife have
seen such a spirit about you. And we want you to know that you have an
amazing spirit about you that we haven't seen often." That really made
me feel good, and also that explained that they are beginning to
become more full time missionaries by finding ways of touching
people's lives on their p-Day. They are dedicated missionaries to me
and my role models! Also today we received a call from Jesus Vera who
told us that he was back in the hospital. He just got out and now he
is back in because he messed up his shoulder muscles stepping out of
the car wrong. So we went to the hospital with our new bus passes to
teach him a small lesson and see how he is doing. And best of news, he
accepted the invitation to be baptized on the 16 of January!! He said
the dates may change depending on if he will be out of the hospital
from his surgeries, but he is willing to do anything to do what the
lord wants him to do! So we had a pretty good mid-day and to add we
had a dinner with the Saldaña family and their niece named Melissa.
She came from Mexico 10 months ago and was baptized here and loves it.
She is a very sweet girl who has a little daughter and is 21 and so
kind. We taught her a good lesson and then we went on an amazing
exchange with Hno. Saldaña. We went and taught a a contacted
investigator a quick lesson and then he took us home because of time.
But throughout the whole time he gave us amazing advice about praying
always without ceasing and he helped me understand that I can pray
without ceasing by memorizing scriptures and hymns to always repeat
and keep my thoughts more pure!! Also he opened my eyes up to the
story of Adam and Eve. He said if you go read the story of Adam and
Eve you see that they fell when they were not united as a couple, so
what can that mean!? If we aren't United as missionaries, or as a
husband and wife we can and will fall into the hands of Satan. It was
such a fast and beautiful day where I just felt the true love of God!
Sunday:
Today was such a good day especially fasting for the right things. We
both fasted for the help of finding more people in this area and
helping our investigators press through their challenges with ease. As
we got going through the day we had such an amazing day at church and
meet a lot of people who I have never seen and they are just loving
and it is so nice to feel like I am at home! Also as we finished our
church meetings we had the opportunity to go home and study for a few
hours. Our studies were really good and it helped me feel the spirit
strong. As we got ready to go to our dinner tonight with the Tryon
Family we broke our fast and could just feel the blessings already
flow in. We went and had an amazing dinner with an English family. The
husband is about 60 and a dentist. He is also the 1 st counselor to
the bishop in our ward and we were blessed to stay with them and watch
the Christmas devotional in a house that was beautiful and huge. The
feeling in that made me really miss my family, but also made me feel
the love from them! They told us we could always go and visit and that
I could practice the piano or cello they have at any time!! Also
during the devotional we got a text from our investigator, Jesus, and
he told us that his day was really bad and that he is doing worse. He
has tubes to suck out gunk from his throat and lungs and also he is
very lonely. So after our devotional we went with Hno. Tryon to visit
him and give him a blessing. As we arrived his appearance was a happy
and crying appearance that we would be there for him at any time with
someone he could come to know well. As we got ready to give him a
blessing he began to shake really bad and stop breathing, mixed with
coughing up blood and lots of other issues. We stopped and made that
he was okay and then Hno. Tryon gave him a blessing after I anointed
him. As he gave him this blessing of healing and strength you could
feel him calm down and you could hear his breathing cease to struggle.
As we finished the blessing Jesus looked at us with tears in his eyes
and he said, "I don't feel scared, I don't feel alone. Thank you,
thank you." We told him how much we loved him and that we would be
back soon and he couldn't hold back his crying. He said to us as we
walked out, "you are my brothers and I believe every word you say to
me. We are eternal brothers." I love him with all my heart and plan on
being there for him in any challenge, but also Hno. Tryon say that he
needed more family members from the ward and now things will begin to
be put together for him to feel the love of the ward! It was an
amazing evening and day and I will never forget the opportunity the
lord gave me to be here in this mission for this person in particular.
The things I learned today is focus on the people and not the numbers.
Focus on what God cares about and then become one with his will!!
Do we love God? Because He loves us!
(1 John 4:19)
Con Amor,
Elder Spendlove

Denton here I am!
Dear Family and Friends,
What an amazing week I have had!!! Actually the reason the email is a
little late this morning is because we got a call from an investigator
who is struggling and wanted some scriptures to read to help him, and
as we were talking to him a man walked by asking if he could ask us
some questions, and we taught him a lot!!! It was an amazing
experience knowing people are looking for the truth and they can find
it in our church!
So I have been transferred to Denton Texas and I have two colleges in
my area! A women's college and another normal arts college!! And
apparently this area is known for its talent in music and this
Christmas the members of the church are putting on an amazing
performance in the church and I can't wait to see how it is!!
So here is how my week was in a nutshell!
Week November 23-29 2015
Monday:
Today was so speedy fast I don't even know what happened!! I was so
crazy getting things taken care of that I didn't even have time to
email everyone back who emailed me, but don't worry, I am working on
them and will get them out!! So today was the last time to be with the
2 Fort Worth Zones! I leave this week on Wednesday to Denton! My
address will be 1512 N. Elm St. #103 Denton TX 76201! So I got the for
sure on me leaving this morning and I started packing right away so
that tomorrow I an finish up and be ready for Wednesday! So for our
activity for pday we just played a lot of sports and had a fun game
called scatter ball! And after our pday we got right back to work and
went over to teach the Family of Erica Leyva for the last time with me
being there, and I was very sad to leave and they were teary eyed too!
I am going to miss that family a lot, but I will be back to visit them
after my mission for sure!
So we were headed to a bus stop and as we got there we found a small
young family waiting as well that we had noticed got off the bus
earlier speaking Spanish. So we began talking to them first and after
teaching them about the Book of Mormon. They really loved it and seem
to want us back, because they wanted our number and to know if they
could call us to set up an appointment. We said of course and pray
they will call us!! I know they never work like this, but this one
really felt different!!
I had such an amazing day and only know it can get better from here!!
Tuesday:
Wow, today was such a hard day.... I had to say good bye to everyone
before I leave tomorrow. It is so hard to say good bye to the people I
have found to be part of my family while I am away from home. It still
doesn't seem real to me that I am leaving, but it is! So today I had
my last service project in the Tarrant County food bank and it was so
amazing! I was able to just have so much fun with all of the amazing
volunteers that come! Also we went to dinner at Hna. Martinez' house
and ate with her and her family. We had a really good lesson and I
will miss her for the amazing testimony she always bore to use in
church while doing a cool handshake with us!! One thing I have learned
from her is to smile through every trial, because others have the same
trials or more and they need that! After our dinner we got dropped off
at the house of Juan and Guadalupe to eat with them as well and to
have our last lesson together. They were really hard ones to say good
bye too when I left, because I feel they have changed my life the most
from the people that we taught... I never thought before my mission
that it would be this difficult to leave the people I grow to love,
but it is as hard as it was to leave my family coming into the
mission!! And the hardest ones to say good bye to were the Peñas
tonight! We visited and had a good time, kind of a good bye night for
30 minutes and it was amazing. They have been my parent figures here
in this area to teach me and be there for every little thing when I
can only email my parents on Monday!! When I said bye I was in tears
and I will miss them so much! As we began writing in our journals
tonight Sonny Moreno called crying and told me, "you are my little
brother, and you can't leave me!!! You need to stay, because I won't
be here when you get back in 18 months." He has kidney problems and
has dialysis and his chances of living slim more and more every year.
I feel horrible that he thinks that way and it could be true, but I
told him how much I loved him and that I would never forget him! I
hope he keeps doing good and stays healthy. Today I would say was just
as hard as leaving into the field again.... But if I don't get out of
my comfort zone I don't grow, so I know what is coming is of God and a
good thing, now I just need to be ready to find those people who need
what I can give them. Things I learned today is that the simple things
you do make the difference to those around you. And never forget whose
life you can change.
Wednesday:
Today was a crazy day! I still didn't feel I was going anywhere until
I saw the car of Hermano Beltran pulled up to pick me up for the
transfer. So I left the area at 8 in the morning right for the Hurst
Stake Center. It was an amazing time seeing all the missionaries so
excited for a change and it really helped me calm down and see that
everything would be alright! So I got to ride with a man from my new
ward home who people call colonel because he was a colonel in the
military and majored in Spanish after his mission in Argentina! It was
so much fun to meet him and when I met my companion he was so awesome!
He gave me a big hug and it was so awesome! Tongan people I have found
out have just a huge hearts, just have a hard time speaking clear
English, but I can understand him perfectly in Spanish which is
amazing!! So I was kind of expecting a huge Tongan, but elder 'Otuafi
is about the same hight as me and just build a lot more muscly than
me, but he only has more muscle, because he has been out longer. So
today was a long, but really fun day!! My new area covers two colleges
and we actually live right I front of one of them and supposedly the
arts program is amazing and the music students are really amazing
here! So elder 'Otuafi messed up his hand and can't ride a bike for
our whole transfer so we are on foot, and we walked all day and my
feet are so sore!! It was a great opportunity to find people, and they
are all over! We actually were able to teach two people quick lessons
out of the blue, and it was just nice to have elder 'Otuafi who isn't
afraid to speak! Also today we knocked on one door and the I am
excited for some more days of success like this!! I didn't take any
pictures, but I will work on that tomorrow! Also pictures of my
house!!
Thursday: HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
Wow so today was probably on of the weirdest days for me in the
mission, because everyone always says missionaries have most success
on holidays, but it is all false!!! People don't want to talk to us
when their families are around, so we spent all day with members!! To
this morning after studies we go picked up by two other Spanish elders
with a car named, Elder Saanga and Elder Hooper. We went to their
house, because they live with members, and we cleaned their members
house while they were out of town for a good service!!! And as we got
finished cleaning the house it started to rain really hard! So after
that we went to the a chapel near by to have a lunch/dinner with our
whole district and a family!! It was really fun and then we got to
sing songs and teach them a really fast lesson!! I took a picture of
my food, so my mom could see I really did get to eat for thanksgiving,
and it was an amazing day even though I missed my family! So today
really was hard, because we had down time and I just felt like a bad
missionary, because I felt like I wasn't out teaching, but then I
realized that it is a holiday and that it would be okay to relax and
eat for a few minutes and visit the members! After our good dinner we
went to another dinner with a recent convert and his family! His name
is Moises and he is a tad goofy and crazy in the best way possible! He
took us with him to his families house where we had a Mexican
thanksgiving with tamales and turkey!! It was so good and really
enjoyable!! As we left it was raining so hard that the streets were
flooded! You could barely see in front of you and now at 10 pm it is
still raining hard and it is supposed to rain all day tomorrow as
well!!! For us walking we are going to be soaked inside and out!!!
Today definitely was a different day for me, however, it was an
amazing Thanksgiving and I wouldn't change it for any experience!!!
Yes the mission can be hard, but it is the best thing ever to teach
you the lessons that nothing else can teach!! If it isn't hard you
aren't growing! My scripture for the day is Alma 37:37!
Friday:
Well today was probably one of the coldest and rainiest days I have
every had in the mission!! So we started off the morning planning on
going to a special needs school and playing with the people there, but
we got there and realized that the school was closed because of
Thanksgiving so we just went home and finished our studies!! As we
finish our studies we had lunch, which was roman noodles, because we
haven't gone to the store to buy anything yet. We had our weekly
planning after lunch and were able to get things figured out really
fast! We had an amazing companionship inventory where we are getting
to know each other even more. Elder 'Otuafi is opening up to me and
telling me when he has problems, and I love it! So today he was
feeling homesick because of the time of year and the seasons, so we
watched a church based Christmas film that was 25 minutes long called
Mr. Krugers Christmas. We finished that and got busy working, but our
work was very slow on foot and in down pouring rain! It rained all day
and is still raining, and we were walking through rivers up to our
ankles in some parts, and the best part was it was freezing cold
outside to make the water burn your skin! Haha it was an amazing
experience and we were able to get in and teach an investigator named
Salvador and invite him to be baptized using the video of Jesus
Christ's baptism. He said as he keeps reading and praying and receives
his answer he will be baptized!! As we asked him how much he had read
he showed us his book mark, and he is already in the end of Mosiah!!
He told us he reads about 3 pages every night and loves it! I invite
all of you to go onto LDS.org or gospel library and to watch the
baptism of Christ! It helped our investigator know what to do and I
loved it a lot! So we came home a tad early to dry off and plan,
because no one wanted us in their house all wet! And know Elder
'Otuafi and I are just talking and getting to know each other! I am so
glad I have the opportunity to be with him, because he truly loves the
people that are in this area!!
Saturday:
Wow what a difference it is in this area than Fort Worth! So this
morning we went to a missionary coordination meeting with our ward
mission leader and had a great time learning and sharing how our weeks
went and how we can improve!! So the one big difference in this area
from the last is that every member I have met so far can speak both
Spanish and English perfectly, and it is hard to keep them talking in
Spanish the whole conversation. Also in our Spanish ward Coordination
meeting there was so much English that I felt like I was letting all
of my Spanish teachers from the MTC down!! Haha it was alright though!
It gives me something to work on! So today we went contacting all day
and were able to find a lot of people to talk to and teach, however,
it is hard finding Hispanics!! It is not like Fort Worth where every
house is a Hispanic. So we had a dinner tonight with the Family
Corona. They are members that were baptized a few years back and they
are super sweet! They made us enchiladas and some really good soup!!
We had an amazing lesson with them and it was nice getting to really
know them! Also we went and taught 2 more investigators their first
lessons and set return appointments!! I love my companion so much!!
Elder 'Otuafi and I know how to make each other laugh and always can
mess with each other and still have an amazing time!!
So today I believe I learned that the best way to love someone is to
truly listen to what they are truly saying and when you are feeling
homesick always think of how you can help your companion!!
Also it is finally cold enough that we found one tree that changed
colors before the leaves just dropped!!! So we had to take a picture
in the 35 degree whether!!!
Also after the crazy rainstorm the canal here is crazy big and deep
with fast moving water!!! It is crazy how much rain we got, but what a
crazy experience!
Sunday:
Today was a really good day for me!! So we woke up and got ready for
church really quick, because one of the Hno.s came and picked us up at
730 so we could get to the church for the ward council meeting, and
being the newby I was thrown in and didn't know any of the
investigators, but had a great experience seeing what the ward council
meeting is like from the perspective of a missionary, and I love it!!!
So after our meeting we went to our sacrament meeting, and it was
really different!! There was people their that can't speak Spanish and
it is translated for them and vise a verse a depending on who speaks
in the ward. And today this younger for got up to talk who was a red
head and white as can be and she was speaking in fluent Spanish with a
Mexican accent. I looked at my companion so confused, and he told me
that she is from Mexico and she somehow is just white like that! It
isn't a bad thing, it just isn't very likely! It gave me hope that one
day I can have a great accent as well!!
So today in our classes we read some passages and this is one that I
looked a lot!! I will put it in Spanish and also translate it!!
“La opción de venir a Cristo no depende del lugar donde se viva, sino
que es asunto de dedicación individual."
"The option of coming to Christ doesn't depend on the place one lives,
but the dedication of oneself!"
It really hit me that it is up to us whether we come unto Christ or
not!! As missionaries we teach people, but I realize more and more
that teaching is not enough. They have to have the desire as well! So
this evening we had a lot of appointments, but they all fell threw the
cracks but 2. A member from the ward, Hno. Torres took us and was
amazing with his testimony and insight to things!!! He is a member I
won't forget, because not only was he amazing at teaching as a
missionary, but he told me that he was very impressed with my Spanish
accent only being out for 6 months and he never would have guessed
that I have only been out for that long!! So he really made me feel
good!!! It was such a good day full of love, and spiritual feelings!!
I invite you to find ways to make every day of your life full of
spiritual experiences!!! And may I start by inviting you to read. True
power from the Book of Mormon comes from reading it first!
Do we love God? Because He loves us!
(1 John 4:19)
Con Amor,
Elder Spendlove
My new companion!!
My new apartment
Week Seventeen
Dear Family and Friends,
Holy cow it was such a fast week and it was just so much fun! I
really believe it was fun, because I had the opportunity to be super
busy with my companion all week and I truly am going to miss him,
because I am heading of to Denton this Wednesday!! I don't know what
the address of the apartment will be, but I will email that a little
later!
I really hope that the email I send you will read! Yes it is long, but
a lot of e things in it this week are things I learned from a member
of the quorum of the 70 named Elder Falabella. I know you will find
hints to help your life for the best!
Week November 16-22 2015
Monday:
Wow today was probably another one of my favorite Pdays that I have
had in Texas! We had the opportunity to email our families for quite
some time and then we went shopping with the English elders to a store
called Aldis! It was super cheap and nice to just get things out of
the road really fast so we could enjoy our day! So the English elders
surprised us and told us we were going to a recent converts house to
spend pday and we were not to excited. However it was so much fun! We
played games and just had a blast with this convert who loves his
missionaries to death!! His name is Steven and me and him got along
really well! He knows I will most likely be leaving and he wants me to
keep in touch so we exchanged emails and information!!
So also today we went to an appointment and taught the Family Favela!
I have never seen such curiosity in any investigators I have ever had.
They really want to know which church is true and are willing to read
and pray to know! I have no doubt if they really do what we invite
the, to do that the lord will give them their answer! After that we
had a surprise from a member from Dallas! He called us and asked if we
could go with him to the hospital to give a blessing! We of course
said yes and he drove all the way from Dallas to take us. He pulled up
in a fancy car and was dressed in a really fancy suit, and then there
is us who just got off our bikes half sweating and the other half
muddy rain water from the rain we are receiving! However, this guy was
amazing and spoke Spanish fluent even tho we gave the blessing in
English and everything! I was blessed to give the blessing to this
sister who is not a member named sister Castro. She is going in
tomorrow morning for brain surgery, because they found brain
hemorrhaging and it is getting worse. I could feel the spirit very
strong and glad i had the opportunity to give it! Then this man took
us out to dinner and we just visited and went home! It really was an
amazing day! And to end it all we just got a call from the English
elders and they thought they called one of their investigators, so we
played along and told them the only time we had fee was at 3 every
Monday. They didn't quite know what to say, and then realized they
called us and they were so upset and embarrassed! It really is a fun
time being a missionary. It is amazing how as you are seriously in the
work you can always have good clean fun!! It was an amazing day!
Tuesday:
Today was a very different but rewarding day!! I almost felt like we
lost a lot of time because we have to take buses and they always seem
to be off schedule. However, we were able to effect a lot of people's
lives through smile things today, and that is what I love about this
gospel, it is simple. So today we did our studies and then biked to
the hospital to check on Hno. Ashton. He seemed to be doing pretty
good, but he can't remember how he got hurt and his mind is slowing
down quite a bit. So we were in the room when a nurse came in and gave
him a speech and mind test, and I feel I did worse than he did and he
is the one who has the problems. I could not remember anything she
asked him to do. So his story is that he felt dizzy on Saturday
evening so he went in the kitchen to make food and he passed out and
hit his head on something! And apparently he woke up a few minutes
later covered in blood, but only enough to get up and get in his bed.
His wife came home and found the blood with bloody handprints
everywhere and her husband in the bed with a blood pool about him. She
called 911 and they took him to the hospital. It is quite the crazy
story and they think he might of had a seizure because of a blood clot
in his brain. So after we met with him we went to give service at the
food bank! Usually we go as a district, but everyone busy, other than
us, so we were able to make new friends! We met a lady who works for
her dad as a veteran rice and she was so sweet, and we also met this
guy named Danny Macnho who was a K9 Cop for 12 years and made some
mistakes and so he is giving service and lost his job, but he gave us
really good advice and he just fell really well with me! I hope I will
be able to visit with him again, he was really funny! So after service
we waited for 45 minutes for a bus to get us and then it took for
ever, because of traffic to get home! So we had time to go to one
lesson with Guadalupe and Juan! We ate dinner with them, and then had
a lesson planned, but Juan and Guadalupe just started to talk about
life and then they began to ask questions and tell about their
problems, so we taught accordingly! We had a great lesson on Faith,
Prayer, Reading and how that can help you deal with Stress! It was an
amazing lesson and I would say I have never felt closer to them until
now! It was an amazing day, and from my day I learned that sometimes
you have to let others talk and as they do you will know how you can
truly help them!
Also today the sisters came by to visit the Peñas, because their first
time in Fort Worth they lived in the house we live in now and we
always mess around back and forth telling them we are the Peñas
favorite and that we are better, but they got us back and left a
letter in our mailbox that says, "Sorry Elders, another day with no
mail, love the Hnas." It was really funny!
Wednesday:
It is crazy how even when you look at your schedule in the morning and
think it will take forever to get over it just rushes by. But today I
learned some crazy and amazing lessons I am glad I was able to learn!
So we started off the day and went to the church to practice the piano
for possibly my last week in the area. And I finally started to play
some Christmas songs and it made me get teary eyed thinking of my
childhood and how I am done with that. But it made me excited for
something knew! So today we went by the house of a recent contact
named Riquel and she was gone, but her husband was outside fixing his
porch and his little granddaughter was sitting on the porch with some
baby puppies, so while elder Lickiss tried to talk to an unwilling man
I sat and talked to this little girls who can't speak any English. We
talked about what she liked to do and everything, and it just made me
think of Liam!! She was really goofy! As she left she was waving shyly
and saying in Spanish to have a good day! We then went across town to
the house of Hna. Bayona to teach her. On our way across town we
missed our bus so we began biking and as I got onto one of the
overpasses I saw an amazing mural on the side of a building, so we
went and took some pictures! We finally got a bus and as we got on and
sat down a lady just started talking to us in Spanish asking us for
our number. Come to find out she went to our church in Mexico a lot
and when she moved she lost connection and wanted to come back! As we
got talking we told her we missed the bus before, and she said the
same thing happened to her. I know that God put her in our path today
for that reason. Best of all is she lives only 5 minutes from our
house! As we got to the house of Hna. Bayona we found out she wasn't
there and she forgot about our lesson and so she was gone. So we
decided we weren't just going to leave because she had a lot of Leaves
we could clean. Sadly, there was only a small broom and dustpan, but
that didn't stop us from cleaning her whole porch and then she pulled
up just so excited we were there and serving her! She helped us clean
for awhile and we had a great conversation until she had to go and get
ready for work. So we decided to go visit with the member who owns the
restaurant, that we at ever Saturday, in her house to see how she was
doing. Come to find out she is doing amazing as of reading and
praying, but her son, who is 14, really is struggling. He doesn't
believe in God and really had no desire to live. We talked with him
for quite a while, and it was just sad to see that he really didn't
feel like life was important. After our lesson with him we went to the
Family of Erica Leyva. We had an amazing lesson with her and her two
daughters about studying and she finally is starting to ask some
really good questions! One she asked was, why do we believe that the
fall of Adam and Eve was a good thing? I answered by saying, "As a
mother you always tell your kids when they are young to not touch the
stove right!? And what do they do? They touch it and ye get burned and
hurt, but as they grown and learn they learn how it can help them. I
would say that Heavenly Father knew that Adam and Eve were going to
partake of the fruit and he was just telling me to not touch the tree
like a parent does to protect his children from something that in a
way will harm them." She got all excited and she said, " and satan
this whole time thought he was so clever deceiving God and them, but
really God had it all planned out." It really made me see that she was
learning something new, and it wasn't the doctrine, but e way to study
things out in your mind! We had an amazing time with them and and hope
that they will read and understand more! For me I learned myself how
to study stuff out more and I learned that God will do things for a
reason, we just have to be willing to follow what he puts us through!
Thursday:
Today was a really good day! We had some really good things happen
today!! We were able to do some amazing planning today and I just have
come to love planning. I try to think about how I made it through life
before my mission, and then I realize that I used to plan a lot before
my mission as well! I don't know how I will live after my mission if I
don't plan weekly! So to end our planning today we had a really
amazing companionship inventory. I feel that this was my first real
companionship inventory today and it was really amazing. I finally was
able to see how important a good companionship inventory is and I
loved it! I want to keep it going for every companionship I get into!
We also had the opportunity to go and check on Hna. Fuentes who had
stomach surgery today and we showed up to check up on her in the
recovery room. She was doing pretty good, but was in a lot of pain. As
we were there I was talking to Erica Leyva and she thanked me for the
book I gave her to study her scriptures and she told me she has never
studied the scriptures like that before! She seemed very happy and was
so ready to study even more! So after our visit with sister Fuentes we
headed to the church and got picked up by Hno. Beltran who took us to
the house of Hna. Aviña. We had really good home made Casserole with
home made Pumpkin pie and it was so amazing! We had a beautiful lesson
with Hna. Aviña and I was even able to serve her by doing her dishes
for her! We really talked a lot about how hard it would have been for
God to let Jesus Christ come to the earth to suffer and die. And I
just kept thinking about my mom and dad letting me come on my mission,
never knowing what could happen to me and they can only talk to me
through email! It really helped me see how important I am to my
parents, but really the more important thing, how much they mean to
me! My parents will never know how much they mean to me in this life,
because there will never be enough time. I would do anything for them!
After our dinner we were headed to an appointment and they canceled on
us, so we went to the church and had a great opportunity to serve
again by putting up tables for our big dinner we will have tomorrow.
We had a quick visit with some members because we needed to tell a
member some news that we found out, but he never showed up, so we
headed home to plan instead. Really it was a fast day, but I learned
that in the slow times we can never give up. When you feel there is
now way out of situations you are in, always remember that Jesus
Christ understands you perfectly and will always be there for you!
Friday:
Holly Cow what a day! It was such an amazing day to be in the mission!
We had the amazing opportunity to learn at the feet of Elder
Falabella, who is in the first quorum of the 70's. He actually spoke
in the passed general conference! He taught us so much that I am
afraid if I put it on you will all be tired of reading, and just be
bored, because it really is things he said and revelation I received
to help me in my area, and to become a better missionary in every
aspect of the work! We had to leave at 7:30 to get to the stake center
on time and the meeting started at 9! It was one of the most amazing
meetings I have had to receive revelation to help me in my work!
November 20th 2015
Elder Falabella First Quorum of the Seventies
Personal Questions:
- How can I find ways to make the mission more enjoyable?
- How can I become a better missionary now so that I can be a better
brother, husband and father in the future?
- What ways does service change people?
To start off our meeting Elder Falabella wanted to shake all of our
hands and so we all got to go and visit with him and I got to talk
with him in Spanish.
Sister Ames:
Charity
- Let the Spirit Guide. And write your conversion story.
Love casteth out all fear. If men do not have charity they are nothing.
The Love that the Lord has for men and women is charity. How can
charity improve my mission?
- Charity is the greatest gift of all! And I feel as I have more
charity I will never fearful in the mission, I will not worry about
home, but I will focus on those here that need this gospel.
What do you think of when you hear love?
- Moroni 7: if you will pray with all the energy of your hearts, you
will receive this charity.
I need to pray more with the energy of my heart!
- Write a list of the qualities I want to have at the end of my
mission and what do I look for in my spouse. If you do not accomplish
them in this life you will together in the next life!
- Always remember your eternal perspective.
- Always keep my focus on the members and the investigators. Never
forget how a member can be changed.
- Don't be afraid to abort your lesson. Use the spirit before you use
your lesson plan.
- Always record the miracles you will have everyday! That is a true journal.
President Ames:
Why do we prepare to go to these meetings? Such as get haircuts.....
To show God a sign.
3 Nephi 20 keep an open heart and keep praying. Do not stop. Take a
few times pray for those around you specifically.
- never only stick with the scriptures you know. Go on and learn more!
2 Nephi 32 What do we have to do to be a true follower of Christ?
Think of two times in your life, one where you were happy and one
where you were upset and lost.
- When you were happy we know you were closer God, and when you were
upset and lost you were lost without Christ.
How can you always be happy even in trials?
Ether 12:27
- If men come into me then their weaknesses will become their strengths.
- But first we have to see our weaknesses so we can have faith in him.
- Sometimes we see goals and they are easier to focus on.
In the garden Adam and Eve were commanded to have Joy. And after they
partook of he fruit they were commanded the same thing.
- As a missionary if we don't do bad, what are we doing? We are not doing good.
As I am with people I can show them that I am there as I show love and testify.
Moroni 10:32-33 This is how missionaries can become better!
- There is always time to come unto Christ, and as we do it we invite others.
How can we invite others to come unto Christ if we haven't come unto
Christ ourselves.
- As you love God, you give your heart to him!
"I stand with Joseph Smith and all the prophets!"
Elder Falabella:
He joked with us for fasting today and then took out a cookie to eat
it! He is really funny with a Spanish accent!!
- "Satan is the master of complexity and the savior is the master of Simplicity"
-Elder Ballard-
Missionary Work is don't best with Simple things:
- Mark 16:15-16 The Great commission : the last words said by Jesus
Christ in this life.
- Without baptism we can not reach the full power of the Atonement.
- What we do is very crucial for all eternity. We are talking about
the welfare of others souls.
Can you explain the plan of Salvation in 40 seconds, because the
gospel is simple?
- We on in he worlds to be imperfect. Not to do wrong, but to try to do right.
Everything Started with Heavenly Father:
- Everything God does is because he truly loves us.
- As we talk about goals we know God has goals as well.
We have a gps in this mission!
G:oal: To bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of all men.
Moses 1:39 (only 20 words) have simple goals that are powerful!
P:lan: Plan of Happiness.
S:elf commitment. Heavenly Father had Jesus Christ as a son and gave
him up for us, because he was committed to reach his goal! As we set
goals let us be committed to reach them!
With the Gps you can not get lost.
Planning: pay attention to the goals we give. How much sacrifice am I
willing to give to reach these goals? Am I committed to reach those
goals?
- The goals that we set are also of God.
- Goals help us overcome temptation.
- Every time you set a goal remember the people behind the numbers.
- Goals help us keep a check an balance in our will of the Lord.
- Goals help us complete our purpose as missionaries.
- Goals as vision are not two separate things, they are tied together.
- We should never stop setting goals in our life. Believe you can achieve goals.
- Heavenly Father is still working on his goals. He always is working on it!

- 2. Sister Lamoni was a mother and was the second convert.
- 3. Servants
- 4. Many!
How can I convert thousands?
- If we truly convert someone they will bring more unto Christ!
- Focus on the Father! Focus on one and teach him to open his mouth!!
- How many converts give you references? What am I going to do!?
- We can not do the work alone! So how can you teach it to others!?
- Involve the whole household!!!!
- It will be hard in the beginning, but by the end it will be easy!
- Focus on having families progressing! Stay with a family and replace
as they leave!
- As we work with families they support each other! PMG last paragraph
in "The Gospel Blesses Families."
- What do we do to help our families come to the gospel.
- Help them realize that we want baptism, but that we can be together
because of the Temple!
- What can we do to help Sister Fuentes with her husband!?
- Have a declaration! Invite people to come and see as a member!
- A missionary is always looking for opportunities!
Alma 36:24
Help the investigators and members understand the full blessings of
the atonement to get them excited!
How to find more friends to teach:
- Relatives
- Coworkers
- Friends
- Neighbors
Who else would you like to invite to the baptism?
Invite investigators and make the same list.
- Be more creative and think of how I can find more investigators!
- I commit to do it!
D&C 58:31, 32, 27, 28
- find a way to get new inspiration. Increase the results in what you
are doing now.
Be anxiously engaged in a good cause! If you are one, how do you
receive the others?
- Work with the Ward list of Part member families.
- Change things up and share a different message.
- Work on talking with more people as we go down the Road. Twetap.
(Talk with everyone that are prepared)
- If people are not receiving you, find another way to introduce
yourself! (Service, Members, tell them you are thirsty)
- I am thirsty: Matt 10:42
- Tours of the church on off days!
- Work with serving others!
- Sing them a hymn. (Families can be together forever.)
- Work better with the bishop? You get his heart, you get the
membership as well!
- If you get the hearts of the children you get the hearts of the parents.
- Find out what the bishops goals and visions are as a ward.
- Ask a priesthood blessing to help the heavens come down to help. He
would receive the love of him, because he would see that he is apart.
(Do it because you love the bishop and not just for him to help!)
- Have a simple meeting when you get into a new area!
- Work with the youth to find their friends!
- Members of the church really want to share the gospel, they are just afraid!
- A new scripture each day!
What is stopping us from doing the work, like these new ideas! They
are good ideas, but they are better when we do it!
- In district meetings give time to open up for the other missionaries
to tell ideas on how they had success through the week.
Pay tithing with Jhonny after teaching why we pay our tithing!
Because of the things I learned today I am going to:
Talk to the bishop and find his vision
Pray for charity
Tithing
Use the gospel GPS
We have ward missionaries and church service missionaries and full
time missionaries.
- When you open your eyes in the morning we think or missionary work.
What can I do to help others!!
- Talk to the first person you see outside!
- Don't be a part time missionaries.
- Dream about the work.
Commit yourself to be a full time missionary at least one day in your
missionary!
If you love it take another day! And email president Monday to know
what happened!
I learned so much and I just need to figure out where I will start to
improve, because I have a lot I want to change! So tonight we had the
opportunity to find people to contact, and we taught two quick door
lessons and got return appointments and hope we get back to them soon!
It is so nice to have the language down enough to be able to actually
contact a little without being scared out of my mind! Now I can carry
a somewhat good conversation and I love Spanish people and the
language so much! I hope I keep getting better and increase my love
for the people! So after our contacting we went to our ward
thanksgiving dinner at the church and had such a good time! A lot of
people showed up and I was able to just get to know so many people it
was nice! I am sad I will most likely be leaving this next week! Elder
Sinischacli I will most likely be going to Denton on bike! I am
excited however for more area and people! I hope I get to know people
fast and also get along with my new companion fast! Also one of my
biggest examples out here, Elder Sinischacli is leaving me to be a
Spanish Training Leader! His nickname is Papá and he calls me Hijo! I
hope one day we are companions!!! What an amazing day!
Saturday:
I am serious when I say everyday gets better in the field! I would
also just say that everyday is like a Sunday, so what is not to like!?
Wow so today we had the opportunity to go to our me,bets restaurant on
east side, but not alone! Brother and Sister Peña went with us, and
loved the food so much! We had a really good time visiting with them
and I am really going to miss them if I for sure leave! Something I
learned from my lunch experience is to love people more than money.
Today as we were getting ready to leave the member who owned the
restaurant wouldn't let Sister Peña pay for their meal. She said it
was the least she could do, and really the lady needed it to help her
business keep going! So sister Peña, being her sneaky self went acting
as if she was getting a toothpick and put 20 dollars in the tip jar to
pay for their meal. I love how really love is what matters! So we also
had the opportunity to get on our bikes and go across town to teach a
lesson, and let me tell you, I know now what all the missionaries have
meant when they have said, we gave everything for our investigators
and still would. The reason I say that is because I have never been so
frozen in my whole life, because of this wind and humidity mixture!
However, as I got to the house of an investigating family the pain
went away and I felt warm, because of the love I felt! And the most
amazing thing is I would do it again, and I will be doing it again,
because I love them! That really makes me think a lot, who do you
love? Do you truly go out of your way, maybe feeling some pain, to
help someone else!? So after our amazing lesson with the family Vidal
we went to a stake conference Saturday session that truly was amazing!
I am going to add the long notes that you can skip if you want, but I
promise if you read it and pray about it you will find something that
will help you in your life! I have never felt so much power in the
words said.
November Stake Conference:
Saturday:
This is an invitation: This is my beloved son hear him!
Sister Ames:
- As members of this church we should always be invited to strengthen
our testimonies in this gospel. As we do the gospel will heal your
families, and you relationships with friends.
- As we serve and labor, more happiness is to await you! Why do you
wait to be a missionaries?
- A true missionary doesn't need a tag!
Being a full time missionary is just a training of a member
missionary, a true missionary. If you need a tag to do the work you
truly don't understand Jesus Christ's life.
President Ames:
3 Nephi 11:14
Have a personal experience with God!
- Everyone is a child of God.
- He is my son too!
- Don't be afraid to stop, go back!
- How many do you pass by?
Open your mouth 3 times:
- act!
- We are all called to gather them in. Never for a second talk
yourself out of it!!!
Wife of the First Counselor of the Dallas Temple:
How grateful are we? Do we express ourselves enough!?
- Are we to proud to pray to the God that made us!?
First Counselor of the Dallas Temple:
- why do we have a prophet? I know he is there to receive revelation
for all man kind, but what does he do by receiving those revelations?
Moses 1:39 What is Gods Purpose, and what is our calling in His purpose?
- The temple is not there just to have sacred experiences there on our
own, it is there as a privilege and a blessing to make covenants for
us and for others to be together forever!!
- Our father in heaven doesn't expect us to be perfect to go to the
temple of the lord, but he expects you to be perfectly trying!
Elder Falabella:
- How blessed are you!?
- How can we truly show our gratitude to Heavenly Father? Missions,
callings, service.
- Retired : being tired twice.
John 5:17: there is no true retirement!
- As you serve the Lord he will bless you with more blessings than you
can imagine!
What can we do to show our gratitude for our Heavenly Father?
Why does the lord want us to keep the sabbath day holy?
- How can we help the members strengthen their faith in God and Jesus Christ?
- As we go to church we strengthen our faith in God!
How does the sabbath day strengthen us!?
- As we serve others it strengthens others.
- Put ourselves aside and be like Jesus Christ.
- It is a time to prime the spiritual pump.
What are you doing different now to keep the sabbath holy that you
didn't do before?
- Prepare yourself so you can concentrate on the sabbath.
- A day to set spiritual goals and pondering scripture!
- Family History on Sunday.
- Change activities through the week to have the correct mindset!
As we look at the 10 Commandments and we focus on the sabbath day we
see that there are a lot of verses on he sabbath. It means it is
important!
- as we don't keep the sabbath day holy, we stop the growth of the
church. Do you want to stop the work of the Lord?
- The seventh day is not our day, it is the Lords day! How can we
please the lord?
- Do we make phone calls for the people we love? It is not just the
obligation of the missionaries.
- Partaking of the sacrament is so important for us. In fact it is the
most important things to do. (Forgiven, clean, and change of Heart)
- We have a chance to remember the covenants we made! It is also a new
covenant in your life every week!! Think about that!
- Come early to church and listen to the prelude.
"I trust more a short pencil, than a large memory!"
- How do we be quiet before church begins!? Do we realize what happens
in the chapel!? We take the sacrament.
- We become one with the lord as we take the sacrament. As we take the
sacrament, it is the closest we will get to the lord outside the
temple!
Self Reliance: the ability, effort and commitment to provide for the
spiritual and temporal things of life, and then help others!
- Both Spiritual and Temporal Wellbeing.
- If you want to be self reliant as regards to the temple, work on
your own names.
- Every night at 6 pray to have mission experience.
Is the Lord Talking to us!?
Closing song: One by one, he heals the people. He blesses one by one.
One by one they doubt his teachings.
Gospel Library
Self reliance
My Foundations
Wow I know that was really long, but that came from servants of the
lord and has changed my outlook on a lot of things, and I know it can
help to change yours! Also the closing song I wrote out a few lyrics
to get the ,eating of the song, and I don't know if it is available to
find, but I invite all of you to try, because I was in tears listening
to the words and understanding the meaning behind it!
So at the end of the meeting we were heading out of the conference
when a member from our ward named Hno. Conde asked if we wanted to go
with him and his wife to their house for some cake really fast! So we
did and let me tell you, it was the best cake I have ever had! So Hno.
Conde is originally from Puerto Rico and his wife is from Utah and she
speaks no Spanish. So we found out that Hno. Conde is a professional
and makes cakes for a business and he only makes Puerto Rican cakes
that take around 3 hours to make! It was amazing and I love them so
much! Him and his wife are just so nice and I really want to go back
after the mission to check back up on them! My last thought is just a
review of the revelation I received in the conference. Being a full
time missionary with a tag is just showing the true missionaries in
training, because being a true missionary and representative shouldn't
truly need a tag to show you love God and his children. I invite you
all to think About this. When I come home I want to see a change in my
family, so I invite you all to do something so that as you see a
change in my attitude of the gospel I also see a change in you!
Sunday:
Wow today was an amazing day full of teachings from so many different
people in the conference that we had! So we started of the day with
the stake conference at the Altamesa building and I learned so much!
We got there a little late and had to sit in the back on the stage,
and we couldn't hear anything at all, so we went and got headsets and
listed to the conference in Spanish so we could hear what was
happening! We also were able to find better seats a little later on so
we could here what was Being said! I would say the one thing I learned
today that was similar to Yesterday is that we will never be perfect,
but we can be perfect at trying! Sometimes we don't realize we have
the gold in our hands and we can receive more as we do the work of the
lord by inviting others unto Christ!
Sunday Meeting:
President Rhodes:
Do you struggle with your testimony!?
How can we make it back to our Heavenly Father?
We learn in the Book of Mormon that King Lamoni became a strong man in
the gospel.
Alma 17-27
- Every Book of Mormon hero has a lot to testify of he gospel if we
truly look for their teachings.
- Even when Lamoni was killing people he still had the light of
Christ. When we get far from Christ we will always have a small part
burning.
- Anyone can change!
- Let us be patient with those that we love!
Jacob:
The importance of preparing for the temple.
How ca we be ready to go to the temple?
- Study the scriptures to see what you can change in your life.
- If you see gaps in your standards and the churches, fill them.
A young Sister:
The importance of the temple and the blessings we receive.
We receive so many blessing as we go to the temple. And we without our
dead can not be perfect.
- As we do family history work that is how we share our testimonies so
those in the spirit world waiting!
- The best way to get something done is to begin.
- Even the smallest amount of times working on family history make a
huge difference.
The Dallas Temple Presidents Wife:
How many worldly gifts are we give!?
"Touching" the temple is the best gift to give and receive!
What is it about the temple that touches our lives?
We have a member in the room that took her 11 hours to go to the
temple because of the disability she has. Do you think it touched her
life? Why else would we go!?
The Dallas Temple President:
Covenants are for our benefit. They are given to us as a way to
achieve the goals in our life's! We make these covenants in the
temple! And as we take the sacrament we renew those covenants as we
truly understand what they are. We can't know the covenants made
without going to the temple!
- until you have entered the house of the Lord and received all the
blessings and covenants, we have not received them all!
President Ames:
What is the importance of the sheep in our lives!?
- We know the lord cares about the number of his sheep.
- Remember that ye are worth more than many Sparrows.
As we feel we question the church what do we do?
- Study the scriptures finding a way to be closer to Christ.
- One by one we need a personal experience with them.
Salvation is a personal experience! 3 Nephi 11 (Hosana): Save Now!
As he heard that he gave them the authority to be baptized and taught
them how to pray. He then gave them the sacrament!
Elder Falabella:
He asked sister Yingling last second to sing Be still my Soul because
he loved her voice and it brought the spirit.
2 Nephi 28:21: If we stop progressing we only go backwards. There is
no middle ground. We need to keep learning or we will be caught in the
snares of the devil!
Does the lord have something to say to me!?
What is it he wants me to learn!?
- Everyone of us have something we can find to improve your life!
Visit with your family and figure out maybe what you can do to change
your life from what you have learned!
Moroni 10:31-32
It states in these verses to awake and open our eyes. What is the lord
telling us we are doing as members of his church!?
How can we wake up.
1 Nephi 14:12: We are a small church of God. But if we are armed with
great righteousness we can do better. We have potential. How do we do
the lords work now!?
Things we could try and do:
- God knows each of us by name. He called Joseph and Moses by name.
- Pray every night at 6 pm. Ask Heavenly Father for opportunities to
share e gospel with others!
- We have gold in our hands, and Heavenly Father will be more than
happy to give you more as you bring more to his fold!
The power of a smile is so much stronger than you will ever know!
- As we go to the temple go with true intent and questions ready to
receive answers!
"Blessings do not have feet, you do!"
If you really want the blessings God has for you, what steps can you take!?
Moroni saw our days, and he saw we were sleepy. Please awake and us
the power God gives you to make a difference in this life!!
I love the quote that says, "Blessings do not have feet, but you do!"
How often do we expect blessings to come when we aren't trying for
them!? Change life a little and go to them for once!
So we were invited by Hna. And Hno. Peña to have a last dinner with
them before I leave and she made some amazing ham, sweet potatoes and
desert for us and I was just a really good way to have them say thank
you to us! I love them so much and I am going to miss them! So we
ended our dinner with a testimony meeting and she bore hers in
English, she thanked us for changing her lives and she looked me in
the eyes and said, Elder Spendlove, you helped us so much that I will
never forget you!" It really hit me, I am making a difference in
people's lives, I am a missionary. However I do realize that we all
missionaries and we all can have this effect on people. All we have to
do is be a little bolder!!
I had the opportunity to teach Jhonny Garcia tonight and he really
taught us so many amazing things! He gave his testimony and I gave
mine and we took our good bye pictures! He is really struggling in
life and where he should go. He feels he does not like Texas and wants
to go somewhere that there are members of the church that will be his
friends. I told him the best place is Utah and that there is extra
bedrooms at my house! He said he would love to go just to visit for
now and one day find a job and stay! I am really going to miss being
with him and his good spirit! He is always an example for me and I
hope that I will be able to keep good contact with him for the next
two years and the rest of my life! What an amazing day! And I today
found a quote from my Brother Tyson Winder that he wrote to me and now
I feel it really has meaning! "It is only the view of where you sit
that makes you fear defeat. Life is full of many isles.... So why
don't you change your seat" -Paul H. Dunn. This quote I feel this week
has really been effective. At the beginning of my mission I feared
defeat so much. I was scared to talk to the people and scared they
would reject me! I still am to a point, but I realize that as I look
at these people as my brothers and sisters that my view has changed
and my seat is new. Do not be afraid of defeat!!!!
Thank you for the many prayers, and thoughts! I have felt them so much
this week and am so grateful that I can be out here! I hope that all
of you have the best thanksgiving ever and truly remember the reason
that we have it. GIVE THANKS!!!
Also I missed Brayden's birthday, so happy birthday buddy!! Thank you
for all your amazing drawings and the things you write! I love you so
much!
I love you all so much and pray for your success and safety always!
Have an amazing week and remember, Hurrah for Israel!
Do we love God? Because He loves us!
(1 John 4:19)
Con Amor,
Elder Spendlove
Pre mortal life:
- Hebrew 12:9
- Abraham 3:22
- Jeremiah 1:5
- Job 38:4-7
Life on Earth:
- 2 Nephi 2:25
- Abraham 3:24-25
Spirit World:
- Alma 40:11
Degrees of Glory:
Celestial: D&C 76:51, 52, 70
Terrestrial: D&C 76:71, 77, 79
Telestial: D&C 76:81, 82
Salvation and Exaltation are not the same!
Never miss the sacrament in your life! Make the commitment now and it
will save your life forever.
Alma 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 27.
- Mosiah 28:3 have true desire to do the work.
- Be the light and be positive in what we do.
- Fast and pray much and you will have knowledge.
- Ammon was willing to give his life to protect someone he loves.
- Always listen and you will know what needs to be said.
- Really love the people.
- Thousands were baptized and retained the same.
Advice:
Study the scriptures with 5 questions in hand.
How to be a better missionary:
- Ammon was focusing on one person in particular. He relieved he could
help a lot of people through this one person.
- 1. Father Lamoni. Start with a father!
- Lamoni received revelation and understood the importance of the Atonement.
